Dating back to the reign of Cleopatra (if not before), the smoky eye look is the definition of timeless. Looking back at the 20h century alone, smoky eyes were everywhere. Dreamy, darkened eyes adorned expressive silent film stars in the 20s, while a graphic twist on the look was the hallmark of the 60s bombshell. In the 90s, grungy imprecision was the order of the day, and as we move into 2020, color-infused smoky eyes have emerged as an upbeat spin on the classic look. “A smoky eye used to be automatically thought of as a dark crease color and high contrast light color on the lid, but today’s more versatile and colorful range of looks leave so much more room to play, says Carly Giglio, our Global Artist & Learning Design Manager. “‘Smoky’ is a descriptor term and it’s more about that sultry, finished look and technique.”

No longer relegated to shades of black or nighttime wear, the modern-day smoky eye is more wearable and customizable than ever. Take Hailey Bieber’s look from our new BOUNCE & BLUR Collection campaign — it’s universally-flattering and ridiculously easy to achieve (thanks, in part, to an innovative formula that can be applied easily with fingertips). In gorgeous shades inspired by the sunlit sky, the new BOUNCE & BLUR Eyeshadow Palettes allow you the easiest-ever, no fail smoky eye — no brush required. “Here at bareMinerals we focus on keeping the smoky eye technique as concentrated color at the root and blending and diffusing color upward to keep that soft, sultry, smoky look,” Carly says. Want to replicate the campaign look? Read on to get the full breakdown, from skin prep to step-by-step instructions on how to apply smoky eyeshadow like Hailey’s.

How to Do a Smoky Eye Using BOUNCE & BLUR Eyeshadow Palette

Step 1: Prep the Skin

After cleansing, apply two pumps of SKINLONGEVITY Vital Power Infusion Serum over your entire face and neck. For a naturally radiant finish and mineral-based SPF protection, build COMPLEXION RESCUE Tinted Hydrating Gel Cream SPF 30 with the Smoothing Face Brush or fingertips to achieve sheer-to-medium coverage. Touch up under your eyes and any redness or imperfections with the ultra-light BARESKIN Complete Coverage Serum Concealer.

Step 2: Apply the Bouncy Formula

Gently swirl the product with your fingertip and bounce the formula onto skin, blending with fingertips to place the color and build intensity. No need to press hard on the palette or skin — you can build from soft to saturated in just a few strokes. For Hailey’s rich smoky eye look, apply the shade Purple Twilight from the Dusk Palette at the root of the lash line, blending upward to just below the crease, while covering the eyelid from corner to corner. Diffuse the edges with your finger. Next, wrap color around the lower lash line to create a smoky look. Layer the shade Sepia Sky where your Purple Twilight ended, just below the crease. Blend upward and diffuse to just above the crease, creating a seamless transition between the two colors. Layer and blend over the shade on the lower lash line for an added level of sultriness.

Step 3: Add the Finishing Touch

Top off your lashes with generous layers of LASHTOPIA Mega Volume Mineral-Based Mascara in Black to create your dream lashes. Carly recommends focusing on the center for a more doe-eyed look, or on the ends for a more dramatic fluttery effect. Pair your finished look with your favorite bareMinerals lipgloss in a complementary hue, and voila! You’re ready for anything.
