If you’ve seen our new STRENGTH & LENGTH campaign, you may recognize Kelia Moniz (and her gorgeous, long lashes). In addition to being Clean Beauty Ambassador Hailey Bieber’s BFF, she’s also a professional surfer — and soon-to-be mother. Kelia was born in Honolulu, HI to a surfer father and ocean-loving mother; so naturally, she and her four brothers followed in their parents’ wave-riding footsteps. Kelia began competing in surfing competitions at the age of 15, and by 18 years old, she moved to California to have more access to professional surfing opportunities.
It was there that she met her now-husband, Joe, and the pair eventually moved to New York City before going back to live in Hawaii full-time. Earlier this summer, Kelia and Joe announced they are expecting their first child together, a baby boy. Shortly after, bareMinerals revealed our playful, flower-filled campaign for the new STRENGTH & LENGTH Serum-Infused Mascara and Brow Gel, which stars Kelia alongside her best friend and fellow clean beauty lover, Hailey.
Needless to say, it’s been an exciting summer for Kelia. We recently caught up with the STRENGTH & LENGTH star to chat about all things clean beauty, motherhood, and growing up in Hawaii.
What inspired you to become a professional surfer?
I think it was the lifestyle of being a surfer. I was at the beach every day. I made the most amazing friendships, I got to travel and it was just a part of me since I was little!
What do you love the most about being in the open water?
I love being with my family and friends in the water. I’m not one to go surfing alone. But my favorite thing about being in the water with loved ones is that we are checked out from any distractions of the world — no phones, no calls, no news; there’s nothing like it.
What’s the best advice you can give to someone who is trying surfing for the first time?
TAKE A SURF LESSON. Surfing is the most fun sport in the world but it can be the most challenging to learn because there are so many unseen elements that you only start to understand after many many hours in the ocean. So getting lessons helps that learning curve move fast!
Congrats on expecting your upcoming baby! What has the experience been like so far? How are you prepping for his arrival?
Thank you! I’ve been dreaming of being a mother since I was a little girl. Growing up with four brothers, I think I’m pretty ready to have a little boy. So far, I’ve experienced almost every symptom you read or hear about of pregnancy. The beginning was so tough. I had terrible morning sickness — I couldn’t even leave my house. I couldn’t even look at my refrigerator. That lasted a few months.
Now, in my second trimester, I’m more energized than ever. I’m growing by the day, the baby is moving a ton, and I’m embracing this time feeling him grow inside of me. I guess I naturally have a pretty busy lifestyle, so I’ve been trying to maintain that busy flow and keep my body moving as much as possible. I’m still surfing and plan to surf until I deliver. I box twice a week, and we are also in the end process of renovating our home, so I have a lot of little chores to maintain every day.
We saw you announced you’re having a boy! Would you like him to follow in your family’s surfing footsteps? Any names picked out yet?
For my brothers and me, there was never any pressure on becoming surfers, and I think that’s what made us love surfing even more. So, I don’t have any expectations. However, I do hope he at least loves the ocean. As for names, gosh, that’s the hardest thing about having a baby! We talk about names every day but don’t have any set in stone yet.
Do you have a philosophy or motto you live by?
I don’t have a motto, but I definitely try to live right. Work hard, but make sure you have fun doing it.
What does your typical beauty routine look like before heading out to surf, and then after if you’re going out to meet friends?
I’m a product girl. Sunscreen is your lifeline when you spend as much time in the sun as I do. My mom has always stressed how important sunscreen is, and I took that to heart. I don’t go a day without some kind of SPF on my face and neck. But when I surf, I use thick waterproof zinc. It’s not the most flattering, but it protects majorly. Because the zinc is so thick, I use a makeup wipe to clean it up the second I step foot on the beach. A few things I always have in my beach bag are 50+ SPF zinc, moisturizer SPF for face, SPF body oil, body lotion, leave-in conditioner, lip balm and a makeup brush.
Which three beauty products could you not live without?
Lip balm, mascara (which can double as a brow gel if you’re desperate) and concealer.
Can you share your favorite bareMinerals product?
I love the foundation stick [COMPLEXION RESCUE Hydrating Foundation Stick SPF 25]. It’s buildable, there’s SPF and it goes on so silky.
How does it feel to be featured in your first bareMinerals campaign for the new STRENGTH & LENGTH Collection?
It was an honor to be in this campaign with literally one of my best friends and absolute beauty, Hailey. We had so much fun shooting this campaign, and being able to work with someone you love, featuring products that you actually believe in, makes it feel like it’s not work.
What do you love most about STRENGTH & LENGTH?
“Strength and length” says it all. This was my first big beauty campaign, and as a consumer, sometimes you see big-production commercials like this, and think: “There’s no way that product did that.” BUT, this product actually did do that! They did not put any fake lashes on me or use any other enhancement products. The STRENGTH & LENGTH Mascara did it all! My lashes have never looked so incredibly full and long.
You and Hailey had so much fun on set. What’s the secret to a successful friendship?
We have a very special friendship. We can have fun doing nothing together, and sometimes that’s the recipe for a perfect friendship.
What’s it like to work with your best friend on a campaign? Did you have a favorite moment from the shoot?
We’ve done two campaigns together now, and it honestly makes a job feel so much less like work — especially this campaign, because we were just told to have fun, and that we did.
What does clean beauty mean to you?
To me, clean beauty means to highlight your already natural beautiful features and not cover them up.
