The Best Way to Apply Powder Foundation: Swirl, Tap & Buff

January 09, 2024

When it comes to applying foundation makeup, there are a few tips and tricks that make the final result look even more radiant, smooth, and oh-so-natural. Luckily, we have a no-fail application method for our fan-favorite Original Loose Powder Foundation. Check it out below.

How to Apply Powder Foundation

Learning how to apply powder foundation is as easy as swirl, tap, and buff. Here’s what we mean.

  1. First, you’re going to open your powder foundation and tip a little of the powder into the lid.
  2. Next, you’re going to take your foundation brush (we love the Beautiful Finish Foundation Brush) and swirl it around the lid, picking up product as you go.
  3. Once you’ve given it a good swirl, you’re going to tap the brush against the lid to rid the brush of any excess powder.
  4. Finally, you’re going to buff the product into your skin. This looks like light pressure in circular motions which actually activates the minerals, transforming them from a powder to a silky cream.
  5. Repeat the swirl, tap, buff method until you’ve achieved the coverage you want.

Powder Foundation vs Liquid Foundation

When comparing powder foundation to liquid foundation, it comes down to your own personal preference. The coverage can often be the same, however, certain formulations look better on certain skin types as opposed to another formula. For example, if you have drier skin, you may want to add some hydration with a liquid foundation whereas if you have oily skin, a powder foundation may work better to combat excess shine.

What matters more than liquid vs powder, is whether or not you’re using a mineral foundation. Mineral foundations use naturally derived minerals to create color versus relying on a synthetic pigment. Our line of clean, mineral foundations is created with a skin-first mentality—meaning each product offers skin-boosting benefits like a smoother texture, oil control, and a more even skin tone. Not to mention, each of our clean mineral foundations are non-comedogenic and non-acnegenic so you can feel good about adding it to your makeup routine.
